Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil has held series of talks with a number of international politicians and diplomats in recent time to assure the return of the outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri who is currently staying in Saudi Arabia.

The official said that the talks were part of the diplomatic campaign launched by Lebanon to receive an official explanation for Hariri’s resignation while staying outside the country and the ambiguous circumstances in which it occurred, adding that the talks also aim to assure that international treaties related to the freedom of movement and expression of the officials of the sovereign states, are respected.

While speaking with foreign ministers of several different countries and international officials, Bassil called for an assistance to Lebanon to ensure the speedy return of its prime minister to his country to provide for the political, constitutional and personal circumstances that allow him to take the decision he deems appropriate.

The Lebanese news agencies quoted the Foreign Minister as saying that his country is bound by the Arab League Charter which does not allow Lebanon to intervene in internal affairs of any Arab League member state, and in the first instance not to attack it, while in turn also demands the same for the rest of the Arab League member states.

Lebanon has been embroiled in an internal crisis ever since Hariri announcement his resignation through a televised speech from Saudi Arabia last Saturday.

Lebanon’s political leadership refuses to take any action before Hariri returns to Lebanon.

Earlier in the week, Saudi Arabia accused Lebanon of declaring war against it and ordered its citizens to immediately leave Lebanon.

Reports indicate that Hariri may be under house arrest in Saudi Arabia, despite his visit to the UAE and his frequent media appearance over the past few days.
