SOCHI, Russia. President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with Syrian leader Bashar Assad in Sochi, has stated that the operation against militants in the Republic is nearing completion.

“Until the complete victory over terrorism, of course, it’s still much too early to say, but as for our joint work to combat terrorists in Syria, this military operation is really coming to an end,” Putin said.

He added that now the main thing is to move to a political settlement. The President paid tribute to the fact that Damascus is ready to work with everyone who wants peace and stability. Putin also drew attention to the fact that Assad managed to start a “real, deep dialogue with the opposition.”

Assad, in turn, noted that “thanks to the Russian army, Syria has been saved as a state.” He also said that the actions of the Russian military security services allowed the promotion of the political settlement in the country, on the basis of respect for the UN Charter, sovereignty and independence of the state.

The last time Assad came to Russia was in October 2015 – after the beginning of the operation of the Russian military campaign in Syria.
