MOSCOW, Russia – Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova slammed US presence in Syria claiming that the country’s military “stays illegally” in the country and that it “resembles occupation”, during a press conference in Moscow, on Thursday.

“From the standpoint of international law, the United States of America stay illegally in Syria. They have no appropriate official permission or invitation from Damascus, the same Damascus whose official representative works on a daily basis at the United Nations and represents their country,” she said.

“They are there against the will of the legitimate government of Syria, without legal basis, so in fact their behaviour closely resembles that of an occupation,” she correctly assessed.

The US currently has military bases in the south and north of Syria and has led a coalition airforce since September 24 without a UN mandate or permission from Damascus.
