DEIR EZZOR, Syria – ISIS positions have been heavily bombarded by Russian Tu-22M3 long-haul bombers on the western bank of the Euphrates River in Syria’s eastern Deir Ezzor province, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

“Six Tu-22M3 strategic bombers, which took off from an airfield in Russia, delivered an airstrike on Islamic State [ISIS] targets on the western bank of the Euphrates near the settlement of Abbas,” the ministry said.

“Su-30SM fighter jets based at the Khmeimim airdrome provided backing for the bombers in Syria’s airspace,” the ministry explained.

“All Russian aircraft returned to their home bases when the mission was completed,” the ministry added.
