General Zahreddine became symbolic to the resistance of Deir Ezzor, which was under a three year long siege, from ISIS forces.

He was often videoed and photographed on the front lines fighting against the terrorist group which won him the respect of the soldiers he led and an inspiration to ordinary Syrians.

He died on October 18 on Saqr Island when his convoy hit a mine laid by ISIS and was laid to rest in his hometown in Al-Suqeida province, the stronghold of Syria’s Druze minority.
