The US considers Russia “a threat from the Baltic to the Black Sea.” This was stated by adviser to the Secretary of State, Director for Political Planning at the State Department, Brian Hook.

“Russia does not have an ideological unity that would guide its actions. But Russia is nevertheless a serious opponent. There is a resemblance to the threat that we encountered during the Cold War. As in the past, the threat comes from the Baltic to the Black Sea,” he stated.

He stressed that Russia “has shown the ability to conduct and prepare large-scale exercises, such as the recent” West-2017″ exercises .

“The conventional threat is real … Russia is modernizing the army and the nuclear arsenal. It has developed a cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, clearly violating the INF Treaty (intermediate range nuclear forces),” the diplomat concluded.
