TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Saudi Arabia wants to “cover-up its failures” in Middle Eastern areas where it was “unsuccessful,” during a a televised interview where he presented a report on the first 100 days of his new government in Tehran on Tuesday.
“Saudi Arabia seeks to solve two problems through enmity with Iran; first it wants to cover-up its failures in the region. Saudi Arabia was unsuccessful in Qatar, was unsuccessful in Iraq, in Syria and recently in Lebanon and in all of these areas they were unsuccessful and they want to cover up their defeats,” he said.
“Enemies of the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] in the region were Israel and Saudi Arabia, and outside are the hardliners in the United States who failed. We will do all our best in this field, but we have anticipated moves for all the possible conditions.”
Iran and Saudi Arabia have been locked in a regional rivalry using proxies and allies to undermine each other. Iran has so far been winning all proxy battles across the region.
