Russian President Vladimir Putin has never concealed that he has the opportunity to exert some influence on the leadership of the People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Lugansk, but he can not give instructions and pressure them. This was stated by presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Russia still adheres to the position that it is not a party to the Donbass conflict. LPR and DPR are republics “which live an independent life”.

“But the president never concealed that he has the opportunity to address appeals, the possibility of exerting a certain influence” Peskov stressed.

This was stated against the backdrop of President Putin holding direct talks with the leaders of the republics, for the first time directly, as it pertains to the exchange of prisoners with Ukraine.
