In Tatarstan, discontent among local residents is growing because of the new rules for studying languages in schools.

As is known, Vladimir Putin stated that shortening the teaching hours of the Russian language is not permitted in any region of the country, while children can choose the study of any other languages for themselves.

The prosecutor’s office of Tatarstan immediately arranged school inspections and found violations. The quantity of Russian language teaching hours was insufficient for the educational guidelines of Russia.

According to official data, about half of the residents of the republic consider Tatar as their mother tongue. The president of the Petersburg Policy Foundation, Mikhail Vinogradov, talked about what this situation may lead to.

The specialist believes that it is advantageous for some forces to aggravate the situation, because Tatarstan has always been in all senses a ‘model’ region for inter-ethnic coexistence.

“There was never any serious unrest in Tatarstan because of language. The balance between Russians and Tatars has been more or less equal. Moreover, this is a situation that’s being brought to the forefront just before the presidential elections.

Tatarstan always voted favourably, even superfluously, and for the federal government, played an important role during the Crimean events. Tatarstan mediated and minimised any conflict with Crimean Tatars. Therefore, today’s demonstration doesn’t do anything for anyone..” Vinogradov said.
