33 Turks rescued off Greek island seeking asylum from the Erdogan regime

CHIOS, Greece – 33 Turks who oppose the authoritarianism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regime are requesting political asylum in Greece after being rescued off the island of Oinousses in the Aegean sea.

They were then transferred to be processed by Greek authorities on the island of Chios where they revealed they were all highly educated with affiliations to Turkish universities.

Following the coup against Erdogan in 2016, thousands of university professors and administrators were jailed or fired from their positions for being complicit in the coup.

The asylum seeking is unprecedented as Greece is usually inundated with thousands of refugees from Syria, as well as other parts of the world including Afghanistan and Pakistan where the refugees pose as Syrian refugees.
