How much did it cost to promote the right-wing mob reactionaries in Venezuela through social networks?

December 17, 2017 – Fort Russ News – Paul Antonopoulos – Translated from Mision Verdad.

CARACAS, Venezuela – Said Edward Bernays, theorist of the United States Public Information Commission and founder of American propaganda, that consensus engineering is an approach aimed at “getting people to support certain ideas and programs, based on the application of scientific principles. and public opinion studies. “

For Venezuela to unleash citizen violence that encourages international intervention, hoarding and speculation by mafias of the distribution of essential goods that, based on the arbitrary increase of a parallel currency, attack of the economy is not enough. Neither the economic blockade implored by political actors like Julio Borges nor the violence commanded by the MUD in the voice of Freddy Guevara.

Rather, the process of spreading lies and misinformation has played a leading role in the unconventional war that is taking place in Venezuela.

How to misinform successfully?

A report on the website of the corporation Trend Micro Inc., dedicated to computer security, talks about three different elements required for false news to be successful:

Tools and services to manipulate and spread the message through the relevant social networks: from simple “likes” through numbers of paid followers, etc.

Social networks: platforms in which people spend more time to get the latest news and information. When analyzing the relationships between the bots and the recipients of the promotion of social networks on Twitter, we know the scope and organization of campaigns that try to manipulate public opinion.

The motivations behind false news: it can be about the desire for monetary gain through advertising, it can also vary from criminal to political, but the success of any propaganda campaign will ultimately be based on how much it affects the real world.

In Misión Verdad we have analyzed how the State Department finances false news, organs of its government such as the Department of Defense, USAID and the NED issue important amounts for the “development of the media” in more than 70 countries, specifically non-governmental organizations. foreign governments (NGOs), journalists’ associations, news media and academic journalism spaces.

In the case of Venezuela, the names of the specific foreign organizations that receive these funds are state secrets, however it is evident the increase of anti-Chavez digital media after the reorientation of the funds assigned by the interventionist agencies to meet the goal of the Congress American in 2016: achieve means “independent, free and professional, empowered and increased.” Such media serve as tools and usually broadcast false news.

How to quote false news to guarimbear?
In the study of a case, Trend Micro calls “create a celebrity” (create a celebrity) to the stage in which a medium or character achieves its positioning and describes how it is based on the increase in the number of followers.

To instigate street protests such as guarimbas (right-wing reactionary mobs), Trend Micro describes how groups are created, promotional material is distributed and the rates to promote a protest (total price = 200 thousand dollars).

To discredit a journalist or media, an operator (artist, journalist, youtuber, instagramer or influencer) is chosen as operator with 50 thousand followers on Twitter or 10 thousand Facebook friends, who for four weeks would write false news that would be retweeted 50 thousand times and visited 100 thousand times more in a video on YouTube. Then they “poison” the account with 200 thousand bots, 12 thousand malicious comments that would be retweeted or receive a “like” 10 thousand times (total price = 55 thousand dollars).

The guarimbas of 2014 and 2017 received a robust financing of both internal and external factors. Proof of this are the 17 crowdfunding projects developed only this year to strengthen the sending of money and equipment to groups of “La Resistencia”, plus the wide digital advertising diffusion of some of their marches or activities.

Even when they say that they will begin to regulate their diffusion in social networks, false news is a component that seeks to generate consent in affected audiences so that they follow imposed agendas as if they were part of their wishes. In the Venezuelan case it means that they passively or actively accompany the coup plot against the Government of Nicolás Maduro.

The themes appeal to the motivations and emotions of the public under economic siege to replace the reason when receiving these ideas. Collective violence as an objective leads to “creating news, in this direction, to mold people’s attitudes and actions, based on the basic ideas to be conveyed,” said Bernays, who was in charge of devising the propaganda machinery that would allow him to to the United States to legitimize its intervention in the First World War in front of its population.

The news agenda in the anti-Chavez media revolves around force ideas such as “dictatorship”, “repression”, “authoritarian and undemocratic government”.

International public opinion unveils “cyberinjerencista putinmadurismo”

However, despite the evidence that exists that sense, now there are campaigns such as the one made by the newspaper El País aimed at accusing Venezuela and Russia of intervening in internal political processes in Spain using terms such as “machinery of interference” or “propaganda of the Kremlin. “

In which it is accused of supporting the destabilization of Spain and the European Union (EU) spreading false news about Catalonia, all in favor of the independence movement. As if Venezuela made use of the same methodology that they use against the country in detriment of the places from where their financing mainly comes from.

The testimonies referred to come from people “who asked to remain anonymous due to the usual Russian reprisals”, from Atlantic Council, a think tank linked to NATO and from a researcher who claimed to use advanced measurement and analysis software that is unknown, and whose results are not auditable, apart from technically insidious comments.

There was no lack of resonance in the Venezuelan anti-Chavez media, referring to a report prepared by Freedom House, arm of the State Department, which accuses governments of countries such as Egypt, Iran, Morocco, Sudan, Turkey, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela, Ecuador. , Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam to create troll accounts, bots, paid commentators or the installation of false news, which, according to the report, only Russia and China did previously.

While they indicate that Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, France, Italy and the United Kingdom are some of the nations that have not fallen into the practice of generating “paid cybernetic armies” to spread their political ideology in social networks. In a clear exercise of shifting the blame for their practices, mainly used by the United States, towards the countries that are victims of this type of aggression.

The coming censorship: blows and counterattacks

This type of new false news campaigns aim to demonize the media and alternative network accounts of the attacked countries. Given its potential to neutralize and unveil the matrices of opinion positioned by the media conglomerate, financed by the banks and corporations that dictate the policy of the United States and the European Union. What has turned networks and information into a space of contention for global geopolitical powers.

In that sense, there are obvious examples of this behavior as the recent announcement of the conglomerate Google about its work to reduce the presence of the Russian media RT and Sputnik in their news search services. Or the recent denunciation of President Nicolás Maduro about censorship and veto his person in social networks like Facebook and Instagram.

That is why it is more than public and notorious that those who finance the false news are the same ones who demonize those who try to neutralize the flow of disinformation that comes out of the dominant US media, which have served so that actions against people like those of Venezuela, Syria or Ukraine are consented on a global scale by those who consume their contents.

This is because the advance in the geopolitical control of the different regions of the world by the US is subject to the silencing of other stories that are opposed to the hegemonic discourse. For this, even when there are different channels of access to information, it is intended to disqualify them to exercise censorship, and to hide any other discourse that is not related to the memory that is constructed from the power to the global audiences.
