BRASILIA, Brazil – In a shock decision, Brazil has announced that it will not follow Trump’s lead in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on their website today that “The Brazilian government reiterates its understanding that the final status of the city of Jerusalem should be defined in negotiations that ensure the establishment of two states living in peace and security within internationally recognized borders and with free access to the holy places of the three monotheistic religions, ensured in the United Nations Security Council resolutions, such as Resolution 478 of 1980, among others. It further recalls that the boundaries between the two states should be defined in direct negotiations between the parties on the basis of the June 1967 line.”

“Brazil has maintained diplomatic relations with Israel since 1949 and recognized the State of Palestine in 2010,” the statement concluded.

This is seen as a shock move as Brazil is at least 25% Christian Evangelical. Their American counterparts celebrated the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in the false belief that is fulfills Christian prophecy of the End of Days.

With a huge number of Evangelicals in Brazil, with them projected to overtake Catholicism as the main religion of the country within the coming decades, Evangelicals have made powerful moves in Brazil’s politics and occupy some of the most powerful positions in the country.

Some speculated that Brazil would be one of the first states to follow Trump’s move. It came as a shock that Brasilia committed to finding a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
