The authorities of South Ossetia are ready to hold a referendum on the entry of the republic into Russia, but consider such a step as a betrayal of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, since South Ossetia is the only state that recognized the independence of the DPR and the LPR Anatoly Bibilov President of the Republic of South Ossetia (RSO) announced at his final press conference of 2017.

“South Ossetia should be part of Russia, it’s our historical homeland. We have lived outside of Russia for 80 years, but today we are also actually Russia – our citizens are also citizens of the Russian Federation, our economy is tied to Russia, salaries and programs are funded from the Russian budget,” said Bibilov.

According to him, the leadership of South Ossetia is ready to hold a referendum at any time.

“But today, when we have the DPR and the LPR, which are in fact in the same situation South Ossetia was in, and when we are the only republic that recognized and helped them, I think this step would be a betrayal on our part,” the president stressed.

On December 26, the Law of the Donetsk Peoples Republic “On Ratification of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Republic of South Ossetia” came into force, according to which South Ossetia will render military assistance to the DNR in case of Ukrainian aggression.

Earlier it was reported that South Ossetia would open its embassies in the Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples Republics.
