Terrorist recruiters can now face life in prison in Russia

MOSCOW, Russia – The punishment for recruiting terrorists can now be as much as a life sentence after Russia’s State Duma, the lower house of parliament, on Thursday passed the law.

These crimes will be punishable by jail terms ranging from 8 to 20 years and a fine between 300,000 rubles ($5,000) and 700,000 rubles ($11,700) or a life sentence. The current law stipulates a maximum punishment for recruiters of up to 10 years in prison, TASS explained.

The law was first drafted by Adalbi Shagoshev, the First Deputy Chairman of United Russia.
