A Moscow-based ISIS cell was being led from abroad, said the Center for Public Relations of the FSB.

The group, which included natives of Central Asia, was preparing terrorist attacks during the New Year holiday period and presidential elections, including the participation of suicide bombers.

Three members of the group were arrested, as well as homemade bombs, machine guns, grenades with fuses and ammunition were confiscated. The authorities found also seized an apartment in which criminals synthesized explosives to create bombs.

A criminal case was opened on charges of terrorism.

Director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov noted that after the liberation of Syria from militants, the real danger is their return to Russia. More than 4,000 Russian nationals are said to have joined ISIS, mostly from the North Caucasus part of the Federation.

According to him, the leaders of international terrorist groups are trying to “create hotbeds” of terrorists in various Russian regions.
