MOSCOW, Russia. The territory of Syria has been completely liberated from ISIL terrorist group. On December 6, the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia Valery Gerasimov announced this at a briefing for foreign military attaches.
“All the cell formations of ISIL in Syria have been destroyed, the territory itself has been liberated,” the General said.
Gerasimov added that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had already reported this to Russian President Vladimir Putin .
According to the Chief of the General Staff, on December 6 the last illegal armed formations that remained in the province of Deir-ez-Zor were destroyed.
The units of Brig. Gen. Hasan Suhel and the 5th Volunteer Assault Corps liberated the settlements of Salihia, El-Khite, El-Katya and Musalah and joined forces with government forces advancing from the south.
“Thus, to date, any former territory under the control of ISIL in Syria no longer exists,” the General said.
