The suspects were in the midst of ‘planning to commit terrorist outrages in densely populated areas’ with the exact location not given by authorities.
The National Counter-Terrorism Committee’s information center representative Alexander Polyakov said: “It’s known that the gang members pledged loyalty to international terrorism organization ISIL (the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and were planning to commit terrorist outrages in densely populated areas”.
“In order to prevent committing acts of terrorism and provide security of the citizens, the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service in Karachaevo-Cherkessia adopted a decision for conducting the counter-terrorism operation from 9:30 am and enacting the relevant legal regime within the area,” he added.
The National Counter-Terrorism Committee’s gathered information of an imminent attack, before security forces were deployed and engaged the suspects at a dilapidated building in Stanitsya Zelenchukskaya.
They engaged the suspects with weapons, taking out the organizations leader in the process.
