DEIR EZZOR, Syria – With Iraq celebrating since Saturday because of the official announcement that ISIS has been defeated in Iraq, the Iraqi and predominately Shi’ite militia known as the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have turned their attention to defeating the terrorist group in Syria.

A Syrian military source in Damascus told Al-Masdar News that the PMU, Syrian Army, Hezbollah, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are currently on the offensive in the southwestern countryside of the Deir Ezzor Governorate in eastern Syria.

Deir Ezzor Governorate and neighboring Anbar province in Iraq are considered ISIS heartland where they enjoy the most popular support in both countries. However, with the ISIS defeat in Iraq, the majority of their remaining forces are now in Syria.

The PMU have sworn not to disband the coalition of militias until ISIS are completely defeated and can no longer threaten Iraq.
