AFRIN, Syria – The largest US-backed Arab group part of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has defected to Turkish-backed forces.

This proves the speculation that the Jaysh Al-Thuwar only joined the (SDF) as they were the only moderate alternatives to fight against ISIS in this part of northern Syria.

This spells bad news for the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) who lead the SDF as now there is no longer an Arab force willing to take on the Turkish military and their Syrian proxies as they invade the Afrin canton, that is controlled by the Kurdish militia.

This also comes as three former fighters of Kurdish-led forces also defected. Full details can be read here.

The timing of Jaysh Al-Thuwar is bad for the YPG as the Turkish military and its proxies have already captured its first town in Afrin. Details can be read here.
