ANKARA, Turkey – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially announced the launch of the operation to clear the Kurdistan People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia from their Afrin enclave in northern Syria.
Ankara considers the YPG to be the Syrian branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), in which not only Turkey, but the US also recognizes as a terrorist organization. Despite Washington recognizing the PKK as a terrorist organization, they arm, fund and support the YPG, demonstrating a contradiction and the point of hostilities between the US and Turkey.
Erdogan in his announcement hilariously stated that “Those who arm terrorists will soon understand that there is no reliable partner in the region besides Turkey.” This can be speculated as being directed to the US as they arm the YPG that Ankara recognizes as terrorists.
His statement however is full of hypocrisy when considering the many years that Turkey has armed and supported terrorist organizations like ISIS and the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front.
