Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promises that Turkey will clear its entire border with Syria from those he called “terrorists.”
Erdogan said this on January 28, when the Turkish offensive in the area of Afrin in the north of Syria is already in its the second week. Speaking at the congress of his ruling party, Erdogan said that Turkey will ensure that Syrian refugees staying on its territory can return home as soon as the border is cleared of militants.
According to the Turkish news agencies, he said that Turkish troops and allied Syrian soldiers have captured important strategic heights.
The Kurdish militia and the Syrian Center for Human Rights reported fierce battles over the Bursay hill, which separates the Kurdish enclave of Afrin from the Turkish-controlled city of Azaz. The Turkish military said on January 28 that they and their allies from the Syrian opposition captured the height with the support of air strikes by combat helicopters, armed drones, and howitzers.
Turkey is fighting in the Afrin area, which is mostly occupied by Kurdish units supported by the United States. The Turkish authorities consider the Kurdish formations to be terrorist.
