AFRIN, Syria – Turkish troops have crossed into Syria’s Kurdish-held Afrin region according to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.

This comes after a week of rhetoric, artillery fire and aerial bombardment on Afrin.

Yıldırım says Operation Olive Branch will be conducted in 4 phases and the announcement of a 30-km deep safe zone to be established in Afrin in Syria’s north.

Turkey is prioritizing this operation as they consider the Kurdish forces, the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a terrorist organization as they are the Syrian branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Spearheading this operation with the Turkish military are also Syrian proxies, mostly the Free Syrian Army and jihadist groups like Ahrar al-Sham.
