Dear Readers: Regarding your Disqus account for comments

Dear Readers, 

It has come to our attention that beginning sometime last Spring, 2017, Disqus began to – seemingly randomly – delete and ‘ban’ any number of commenters from commenting on FRN stories for reasons beyond our capacity to ascertain. Disqus has not responded to our query with any particulars, and instead provided us a link to their TOS. We find that unacceptable to our readers. 

Our policy on comments is pretty simple – we have only ‘removed’ comments, and rarely banned commenters, when they were abusive to the authors of the pieces themselves, or misrepresented the content of the article. 

So that there is no further confusion regarding our policy, we are now announcing a policy change:

We will no longer be moderating our comment section for offensive language or abuse, and only will moderate these when they contain advertising for products or other news services spreading fake news. 

That’s right. In the name of open discourse, we’ll leave it to other commenters to decide what to refute, respond to, and which other commenters that want to receive comments from. Readers are able to ‘block’ other commenters on their own, meaning they don’t have to read those comments. Those comments, however, will remain in the comments section and visible to others.  

If you or anyone you know has been ‘banned’ from commenting on FRN stories, please try to create a new Disqus account, perhaps from a different email, in order to get around this. 

In the meanwhile, we will be trying to sort this mess, if possible. It has never been our policy to stifle debate. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience.
