The situation in Syria was discussed during a telephone conversation between the chief of the Russian General Staff, General of the Army Valery Gerasimov and the Chairman of the Committee of the Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Joseph Dunford.
This was reported in the Russian Defense Ministry, stressing that in addition to the situation in Syria, other aspects of bilateral relations were discussed.
The previous time Gerasimov talked with his American counterpart was on December 6, 2017. Then Syria also dominated the conversation.
In early December, the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation stated that the Russian military were ready to help the Pentagon in destroying militants in the western regions of Iraq.
On December 27, Gerasimov accused the US of training terrorists of ISIL militants at its base in the Syrian city of Tanf.
