RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The US government is quick to name one or another anti-imperialist organization as a “terrorist group,” to categorize countries that oppose it as “Pariah State” and to lift sanctions against people who do not bow to its political model, social and cultural development.
But who was the only government in history to use nuclear weapons to genocide civilians? What country has been notorious for invading or bombing foreign countries that pose no threat or have not attacked it? What country has spent billions for decades to fund “revolutions”, blows and terrorist attacks against enemy countries?
Who Created Al-Qaeda? Who is behind the emergence of ISIS?
Who used Agent Orange and Napalm in Vietnam? Who used chemical weapons and depleted uranium in Iraq? Who carried out saturation bombing in North Korea until there was no single building left?
Who kidnaps national and foreign civilians to imprison them and torture them in secret prisons, with no right to contradictory, ample defense or even a lawyer? Who kills American and foreign civilians by drones without trial?
Yes, the ISIS, the Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda and several other groups are actually terrorists. But the largest terrorist organization in the world is the US, its government and its armed forces.
Especially if we take terrorism in its most etymological definition, such as the spread of terror among enemy civilians through widespread attacks against them, with the aim of destabilizing enemy populations and weakening their support for their respective governments.
The US has used this tactic in all its military interventions for decades, and it has become part of US official military doctrine under the name Shock and Awe – applied, for example, in Iraq. And how else can a military doctrine be understood, literally and avowedly, in the “dread”, but as state terrorism?
It is impossible to understand the contemporary international scene without having this in mind. Assad has already pointed the way: fighting terrorism is fighting America, its interests and its agents.
