IDLIB, Syria – In a celebratory manner, the Idlib Free Army, a branch of the Free Syrian Army, has uploaded a video showing the Syrian Army fleeing Khuwayn yesterday in the southern countryside of Idlib.
The aerial footage is used as propaganda purposes, however, context is never given in such videos.
A common tactic that has been used by the Syrian Army, and seemingly never learnt by militants in Syria, pro-government forces often abandon positions and towns when jihadists launch a counterattack.
Once positions are cleared and jihadists occupy the new site, the Russian and Syrian air forces usually launch a barrage of bombing raids with the assistance of the Syrian Army artillery units, decimating jihadist positions.
This has worked to great effect throughout the war, and is usually followed by a Syrian Army rapid offensive.
The Free Idlib Army are allied with jihadist forces in Idlib, most significantly with the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front.
