CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan authorities reported that several people were killed and five militants were arrested during a military operation to capture former police pilot Oscar Perez, in El Junquito in the northwest of Caracas, on Monday.
During the shootout between militants and security forces, two police officers were reportedly killed and five were seriously injured.
The former police officer posted a number of videos on Instagram claiming government forces had cornered him. Perez was tracked down to be hiding in El Junquito. He has been on the run for six months.
A manhunt for the former police pilot Oscar Perez was initiated after he hijacked a helicopter in June and launched grenades at government buildings.
The Venezuelan government have accused Perez of terrorist activities. Perez criticised the Venezuelan President Maduro for the economic crisis in the country.
