The newest Russian aircraft fueler Il-78M-90A has taken its first flight today. The chief pilot was a decorated Hero of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Kuimov. The flight lasted 35 minutes.

The new tanker differs from its predecessor with a modified wing, new engines that use less fuel and a new control system. It has an increased range and can hold more fuel to refuel aircraft. The IL can simultaneously fuel two aircraft in the air. When used on the ground – four.

According to Alexei Rogozin, the general director of the Ilyushin Aviation Complex, the aircraft was created for Russia’s air force, but foreign partners are also interested in the tanker.

The IL-78M-90A was the first aircraft-tanker to be assembled in Russia. Prior to that, all IL-78s were produced in Uzbekistan.
