ANKARA, Turkey – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told the United States that Manbij in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo province will be returned to “its true owners.”
Erdogan then went onto say that Washginton had “calculations against Turkey, Iran and maybe Russia” in Syria because there was no other motivation for the US to be there in the post-ISIS period.
The comments were spurred on by a Pentagon claim made yesterday that it had seen no indication that Turkey would extend their “Olive Branch” operation against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) from Afrin canton to Manbij.
The US are the main backers of the YPG, despite recognizing their parent organization, the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) as a terrorist group.
The YPG lead the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who currently control Manbij, despite Manbij being an Arab-majority city, which is probably in reference to Erdogan’s claims in returning the city to its “true owners.”
