AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – A majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, approved two bills regarding of the Armenian genocide that began 1915 on Thursday morning.
One motion stated that the Tweede Kamer “recognizes the Armenian genocide”, while the other that a Dutch Minister or State Secretary should attend the commemoration of this genocide in Armenia in April.
The motions were first submitted by ChristenUnie parliamentarian Joel Voordewind with all four coalition parties unilaterally supporting the motions.
Relations between the Netherlands and Turkey are already tense as the Netherlands refused Turkish ministers to be able to campaign for a referendum that gave president Recep Tayyip Erdogan more power.
This latest move is expected to sour relations further.
