NIZHNI NOVGOROD, Russia – Russian Communist Party presidential candidate Pavel Grudinin held a press conference as part of his campaign tour in Nizhni Novgorod on Friday.

Grudinin argued that the Russian Constitution should be amended to limit presidential re-election to a maximum of two consecutive terms.

He went on to say, “I believe that Article 83 [81] of the [Chapter 4] [Russian] Constitution needs to be amended, including the phrase “for more than two terms running,” which should be removed.

The president should be in office for no longer than two consecutive terms because “it has allowed one to hold power like a tsar until he or she dies.”

Grudinin also stated that “we have repeatedly stated that if everyone participates in the elections, 60 percent of our citizens will vote for Pavel Nikolaevich Grudinin and our programme. I am convinced in that.”

Leader of the Communist Party Gennadi Zyuganov stepped down from presidential race in order to endorse Lenin State Farm director Pavel Grudinin as the nominee on December 23. For the first time, a non-party candidate is to run from the Communist Party.

The Russian presidential election will be held on March 18, 2018. The election campaign officially started on December 18.
