The last words of the pilot of the Russian Air Force, Roman Filippov: “This is for our guys!” – he shouted, referring to the soldiers of the Russian army who died in Syria.
This is very clearly heard on the video taken by the militants at exactly 3 seconds – followed by a loud blast. (Note that the video is only available on the Russian VK social media platform – you may need an account to view.)
The terrorists surrounded the pilot when he blew himself up with a grenade, trying to take as many enemies with him as possible. There are visibly less of them after the blast.
On February 3, a Russian Su-25 was shot down by terrorists in the Syrian province of Idlib. The pilot catapulted from the burning aircraft and was able to land successfully, despite being fired on from the ground with firearms.
It is a war crime to shoot at a parachuting pilot in distress, under Protocol 1 of the Geneva Convention.
Major Filippov managed to notify of his coordinates back to the airbase in Khemeymim, after which he fired at the approaching jihadists from an automatic pistol Stechkin. He was wounded and surrounded when he decided to blow up a hand grenade so as not to be captured by the enemy alive.
The deceased Hero was considered one of the best pilots of Russian assault aviation.
