Turkish-led forces, particularly the Free Syrian Army, have photographed themselves stepping on the US flag in Syria’s northwest Afrin region.
The photo was taken at the Bafliyun mountain where the Turkish-led forces are taking on the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in an effort to expel the group entirely from this part of Syria.
Turkey considers the YPG to be the Syrian branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that they identify, as well as the US, as a terrorist organization.
The US, despite being one of the largest supporters for Free Syrian Army groups operating in northern Syria, has also been the main supply of weapons, aid and funds to the YPG. This demonstrates a contradiction in US foreign policy as it directly supports the YPG but recognizes its parent organization, the PKK, as a terrorist organization.
Turkey and the US are however also NATO allies, demonstrating an inconsistency as the Turkish-led forces disrespect the US flag.
This demonstrates the many inconsistencies and contradictions to be found in the Syrian War.
