The Government of Iceland informed the Russian embassy in Reykjavik that it would temporarily suspend bilateral contacts with Russia. In addition, the leaders of Iceland will also not attend the World Cup.
Iceland’s foreign minister Gudleigur Tor Thordarson outlined the Icelandic government’s position on the situation surrounding the attack in Salisbury on March 4: Iceland temporarily defers high-level bilateral dialogue with the Russian leadership until the situation becomes clear.
The official statement of the Icelandic government states that the authorities decided to “show solidarity with the United Kingdom and the Western countries by joining into a coordinated response to the “chemical attack in England” which was “a gross violation of international law threatening security and peace in Europe ” .
Earlier, a number of European countries, including France, Germany and Poland, the Baltic states, Ukraine, as well as the United States and Canada, decided to expel tens of Russian diplomats in connection with the poisoning of Sergey Skripal. At that, the UK, no longer part of the EU – refuses to give a sample of the poisoning substance.
