NATO toys with Ukraine – will it ever be a member?
Special Representative of the US Department of State for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, believes that Ukraine and Georgia are not ready to join NATO. He stated this in an interview with UNIAN .
“They had to do a lot of work (Ukraine and Georgia), and today there is still a lot to do for both countries,” he said.
The diplomat noted that the US planned to provide Ukraine and Georgia with an action plan for NATO membership back in 2008, but these states were not ready to join the alliance. According to Volker, a number of NATO member countries oppose this step, not wishing to give any guarantees to Kiev.
The Verkhovna Rada, in December 2014, amended laws abandoning the non-bloc status of the state. In June 2016, additional changes were adopted that determine the country’s foreign policy as it pertains to joining the NATO bloc. By 2020, Ukraine must ensure full compatibility of its armed forces with the armies of the alliance countries.
Today in the Ukraine, hundreds of US, Canadian and British troops are working to bring the Ukrainian army up to speed with NATO standards.
