IZMIR, Turkey – From Smyrna, or now known as the Turkish name of Izmir, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogon began his election campaign, having a provocative show with… songs and counterfeiting of history.
Turkey’s President, in the run-up to the June 24th elections in Turkey, has begun his election campaign from an opposition bastion, Izmir. A city that was used on the last direct attack on Greece.
Speaking to the Chamber of Commerce, Erdogan referred to the destruction of the city. And accused the Greeks of burning it!
“The biggest blow that has been given to this beautiful city is by the Greek soldiers burning Smyrna as they retreated. Do not look at what the Turks did. The biggest blows were made by those who consider themselves to be civilized in this geographical area,” Erdogan said as reported by ANT1 correspondent in Turkey, Maria Zacharaki.
The Great Fire of Smyrna occurred in September 1922 and resulted in the complete destruction of the Greek and Armenian Quarter of the city, killing upwards of 100,000 people but the complete preservation of the Turkish areas of the city.
This was part of the Turkish genocide against the Armenians and Greeks.
