Aerflot to introduce in-flight internet access
The Russian national carrier “Aeroflot” is to begin providing passengers with Internet access services on short and medium-range flights.
A contract for the provision of communication services and equipping 81 aircraft with the necessary equipment was concluded for 3.5 years with Stack.com. It is one of the largest players in the Russian and CIS market in the communications market, offering customers (state and corporate) solutions using various satellite technologies.
The aircraft that will be equipped are the Airbus 320 and 321, which are used mainly for flights to European countries and domestic flights. In addition to access to the Internet, Aeroflot’s solution allows passengers to access internet from their devices – smartphones, tablets and laptops – and the entertainment system of the airliner.
The process of retrofitting aircraft to provide fast access to the Internet will last until the end of 2019,with some aircraft to start offering the service as early as July 2018. The cost is 800 rubles per hour or 1000 for the entire flight. ($17 USD)
Aeroflot already offers Wi-Fi on some long-distance flights. Now this service will be extended to much of the fleet.
According to the head of the analytic service of the agency “AviaPort” Oleg Panteleyev, the new service will be popular. “The service will certainly be very popular for businessmen who travel by air – stay in touch, continue working during the flight, certainly a significant opportunity,” – he told Vesti.
“We are used to the fact that we have internet in the metro, most Moscow land transport, in many public place – and now airlines!” says Panteleev.
