WIESBADEN, Germany – Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) elected Andrea Nahes as their new chair in the western city of Wiesbaden on Sunday. She won with 414 votes (66.35 percent) against her competitor Simone Lange.

In her speech before the vote, Nahles answered questions including her perspective on Germany’s relationship with the US and Russia.

“The relationship with the US and Russia has to be taken care of but needs to be treated realistically, which includes voicing critique towards Russia,” she said. At the same time, Nahles noted that it doesn’t mean “turning our backs towards the politics of dialogue with Russia.”
