MOSCOW, Russia – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif were united in their condemnation of Western military action in Syria during a protocol conference in Moscow on Saturday.
“Any military solution is illegal and unsustainable,” Cavusoglu said.
“Foreign intervention in Syria can only lead to further escalation, and we see as extremely unfortunate the activities of the United States in Syria which further escalate and exacerbate ethnic tensions in Syria,” Zarif said.
The Russian minister said “the initiators of this action confirmed by their actions that their statements in support of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic are only words that should, apparently, cover plans to reformat the Middle East and divide Syria into parts.”
Zarif and Cavusoglu came to Moscow to participate in a special meeting with Lavrov, as Turkey, Russia and Iran are the sponsors of the Astana Process, which promotes the Syrian peace settlement.
