An investigation has begun into authorities of the Ordzhonikidzevsky district of Yekaterinburg who allegedly demand money for adopting out children.

The audit was started after the publication in The Insider of reports of extortions from the management of social services. According to the publication, several tens of thousands of rubles are asked for one child. In Russia, besides a number of administrative fees, children are not sold but given to prospective adoptive parents after a thorough screening.

“Based on the results of the pre-investigation, if there are appropriate grounds, a criminal case will be immediately started.”

In recent years, adoption of Russian children to foreign parents has been banned due to a number of cases of child abuse and the authorities’ inability to check in on their safety. As some of the most vulnerable members of society, it seems there’s much too many parties willing to exploit their ordeal.
