MOSCOW, Russia – Iran`s Defence Minister Amir Hatami expressed his surprise about the US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US troops from Syria, speaking from Moscow on Thursday.

“Frankly speaking, I was surprised, because the Americans had plans to stay in Syria and divide it up,” he said.

Speaking about the Turkish operation in Syria’s Afrin, he noted that Turkey has “some concerns about security, it would be better to deal with this concern through the Syrian government.”

“Those forces that entered the Syrian territory without the agreement of the Syrian government must leave the territory of this country,” he said.

Trump instructed the Pentagon on Wednesday to start preparing plans for the withdrawal of US troops from Syria within the next couple of months.
