“War” in the Eastern Mediterranean – How alliances are shaped

ATHENS, Greece – The ongoing Turkish challenges in the Cypriot Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) and the Aegean, with the danger of an “accident” being visible every day, the military operations of the Turkish armed forces in Syria, and the role of “dervenaga” that wants to play throughout the eastern Mediterranean, along with the challenges made by “Sultan” Erdogan against the West and the hard energy game played in the region creates an explosive cocktail of events that can now easily evolve even in a warlike conflict.

Geopolitical and geostrategic correlations have changed significantly, and the countries around the Mediterranean Sea form alliances for the next day and are preparing for every possible event.

Turkey and the Erdogan regime seem to have … escaped! Everyday challenges in the Aegean and Cyprus, threats of war, statements about the “borders of our hearts” and extortion’s to Europe that will open the borders and fill Old Europe with refugees, immigrants and … jihadists who will bloodlet the European states.

They even ignore the US and NATO and launch attacks on Israel. The rising hate and anti-Semitism, which turned personally against Prime Minister Netanyahu, whom Erdogan described as “a terrorist,” create new geopolitical dynamics in a region that can be ignited at any time.

In vain, Washington tried to pass annoyance messages to Ankara. With the backs of the Russian “fatherland” and an ally with Shi’ite Iran and President Roheini, Erdogan is dreaming of a rebirth of the Ottoman Empire and absolute sovereignty in the eastern Mediterranean and of course its wealth.

Facing the provocative “sultan”, the rest of the eastern Mediterranean countries show a mood for rallying against him.

In this context, a powerful quadrilateral axis, betwen Greece, Cyprus, Israel and Egypt, is being fired, with the main objective of curbing Turkish aggression.

Israel is one of the most important US allies, having one of the most powerful economies in the world. Its military power is enormous, with experienced pilots and state-of-the-art aircraft, powerful naval and well trained soldiers.

In the balance of power, one must not forget the existence of the largest population and strongest military Arab country, which is none other than Egypt of General Al Sisi, whose hostility to Erdogan has become permanent and intensifying, especially after the signature Tel Aviv – Cairo agreement to export Israeli gas to Egypt-hungry energy.

The relations between Greece and Cyprus with Israel and Egypt are very good and the facts show that this quadrilateral axis, with the US’s indirect support for the present time, is lined up by the “sultan” and his companions.

The beginning of the change of attitude of the countries of the eastern Mediterranean began to emerge in recent days, when almost simultaneously the prime ministers of Greece and Israel chose for the first time not to ignore the aggressive and humiliating rhetoric by Erdogan, responding in an extremely intense tone.

Benjamin Netanyahu did not hesitate to remind via Twitter of the “merciless” Erdogan, who has shown himself to … beaten lately for the oppression of the Palestinians, for the occupation of the northern part of Cyprus and for the bloodshed in Afrin.

On the same day, the Greek Prime Minister sent a clear signal to Ankara that Greece had a State of Justice and a prime minister and not a Sultan who intervened in the judgments, while demanding the immediate release of the two Greek soldiers detained in the Turkish prisons of Adrianople.

The above developments, and especially the escalating Turkish provocative actions, have been the subject of a discussion at the Netanyahu-Anastasiades telephone conversation on Monday afternoon (02/04).

On the same day, Mr. Anastasiades had a telephone conversation with the re-elected President of Egypt, General Abdul Fatah al-Sisi. In their telephone conversation, in addition to the fact that President Anastasiades congratulated the Egyptian leader for his victory in the last elections, they discussed the alarming developments in the wider region and are expected to have a new meeting in Alexandria, Egypt, where they will attend the opening of the program “Nostos”, together with Greece.

Also on May 8, the tripartite meeting between Cyprus, Greece and Israel in Nicosia is expected to further strengthen their cooperation on a number of critical issues related to coordinated action.

Somewhere here one can now diagnose two powerful and opposite axes that are shaped in the area now under the high guardianship of the two “classic” superpowers. On the one hand, Greece, Cyprus, Israel and Egypt, under American influence, while on the other hand, Erdogan with the support of Putin’s Russia and Iran is moving the path of aggressive rhetoric and confrontation.

Developments in the coming period will be overwhelming and no one can predict what’s going on if the Mediterranean gets ‘fire’.
