RAMALLAH, Palestine – Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has been confirmed to serve another term as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s (PLO) Executive Committee on Friday.
This came after a four-day deliberation between the Palestinian National Council (PNC) in Ramallah.
“Finally, we have reached the end of this council, and we have agreed on the executive committee. And now, I present you my list of this committee which has been formed with the agreement of the all factions including Fateh movement, the Democratic Front, The People’s Party, the Palestinian Liberation Front, Arab Palestinian Front, People’s Struggle Front, Fedaa Party, The Palestinian Arab Front and the National Initiative Movement,” Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President said. “These national figures all participated in forming this list, so that you know that we only take the hard decisions when we need to, and it happens with difficulty, after long and painful discussions, whether on this issue or other issues,” he added.
Abbas then extended the hand of peace to Hamas, an Islamist terrorist group, as well as other Islamist groups, that have much popularity among Palestinians.
“Three seats remain, because we do not want anyone to be excluded from the national unity and because we do not like exclusion. Organisations including Popular Front and Hamas – if they accept national unity and to stick to the decisions of the Palestinian Liberation Organization – and the Islamic Jihad and the brothers in the Palestinian Arab initiative and other organisations which deserve to be in the executive committee. These seats are for those individuals. And if we need more, because of the necessity of national unity, we shall create the necessary seats for them,” he said.
“As we remember the old generation, we also remember the new generation and I have talked to you about some of the children of the martyrs and the detainees, but it has come to my mind to name Ahed Al-Tamimi as a member of honor in the national council,” he added.
