CARACAS, Venezuela – The President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, thanked the strong international position of Venezuela in its role as presidency of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (Mnoal) and with the cause and rights of the Palestinian people, whom he called to continue protecting on international front.

In the Miraflores Palace, where the high Palestinian representative was with the President of the Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to sign mutual cooperation agreements, Abbas highlighted that the Venezuelan Government joins the world repudiation for the United States to not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“It is a Venezuelan position that most countries in the world also have. This reaffirms our interest in finding serious negotiations with Israel based on resolutions of international law and the importance of forming a multilateral instrument that allows us to continue working so that Palestine has its full right as a sovereign State in the United Nations (UN). Until then, we must continue to protect the people of Palestine,” explained the guest Dignitary.

He recalled that East Jerusalem is a city occupied militarily by Israel since 1967, despite being the capital of the Palestinian state, a fact that is recognized by the great majority of the nations of the world, but attempts to be undermined by a small group of nations. “We hope that some countries of the American continent will not move their embassies to Jerusalem because it contradicts international legality,” he warned.

Abbas thanked the people and Government of Venezuela for their support to the Palestinian students granted scholarships in the country to pursue integral medicine, engineering and other careers, and for the construction of the Hugo Chávez Ophthalmological Hospital in Palestine, which will be put into service very soon.

“My thanks, Excellency President Maduro, to your government and to the friendly people of Venezuela for their support of the Palestinian cause, hoping that Venezuela will continue to progress, so that the people may prosper and continue in resistance against all those who want to confront it. Peace be with you,” he concluded.
