WASHINGTON DC – US President Donald Trump has authorized $6.6 million to fund the so-called ‘humanitarian group’ known as the Syrian Civil Defense, or more commonly as the White Helmets, according to the State Department. However, this funding appears to be significantly less than the prior budget, and raises questions about the purpose of such renewed funding.
“The United States Government strongly supports the White Helmets who have saved more than 100,000 lives since the conflict began, including victims of Assad’s chemical weapons attacks,” a State Department statement read.
Trump back in March froze more than $200 million in aid to Syria, including to the White Helmets, for “re-evaluation.” This also came when Trump announced US troops would soon be coming out of Syria, where they number around 2000, and that the US should “let other people take care of it.”
One State Department official defended the decision to freeze funding to Syria back in March, stating:
“The US jointly supports the White Helmets with other donors, and we expect their operations to continue as a result of additional multilateral donors. The President has been clear that partners and allies should assume a larger role in stabilizing Syria.”
However, on Thursday, the State Department said:
“The United States Government strongly supports the White Helmets who have saved more than 100,000 lives since the conflict began, including victims of Assad’s chemical weapons attacks. These heroic first responders have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and continue to be deliberately targeted by the Syrian regime and Russian airstrikes. Since 2013, more than 230 of these brave volunteers have been killed while working to save innocent Syrian civilians.”
Trump has made it clear, given the unusual circumstances of his presidency and his alleged war against the US deep state, that he has ‘allowed’ other officials, even ones he has himself appointed, to ‘say what they think and believe’, and that no statements other than Trump’s own, represent Trump’s positions. In short, there is an apparent difference or rift between the ‘Trump Administration’s policies’, and Trump’s own positions and views.
However, the chemical weapon allegations have been without proof, and rather, the proof that has been put forward, especially by independent journalists like Vanessa Beeley, has found the deep connections between the White Helmets and Al-Qaeda affiliated groups operating in Syria.
The White Helmets have been whitewashed so that the US can legitimize its funding of Al-Qaeda affiliated groups in Syria. Syria is an independent state that operates outside of Washington’s neo-colonial web, and it is for this reason that the US supports all groups fighting against the Syrian government, including ISIS.
It has been confirmed by several trusted sources and independent journalists, as well as undeniable visual/photographic evidence, that White Helmets ‘volunteers’ and ISIS/FSA terrorists are working together, and often exchange personnel.
