US President Donald Trump has stated on Twitter that Iran will “suffer consequences” if it continues to threaten the United States.

“To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!” Trump said on his Twitter account.

Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned Donald Trump not to “play with the lion’s tail,” stressing that Tehran “is not at war with anyone.” According to Rouhani, “the strength of Iran is dissuasive.”

“The United States should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and that the war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” said the Iranian leader, warning the United States of a hostile policy toward Tehran, as quoted by Reuters.

Rouhani’s statement came after the US State Department said Washington would persuade his allies to stop buying oil from Iran until early November. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said earlier that Washington is ready to introduce sanctions against Russia, China and any other country that continues to buy oil from Iran and opposing the US position.

According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, US sanctions against the Iranian oil field will come into effect on November 4.

Pompeo also called Iran’s religious leaders “hypocritical holy men” and accused them of corruption by claiming that they accumulate vast sums of wealth while allowing their people to suffer.

Pompeo’s criticism comes close to the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution in the country as the United States prepares to reimpose economic sanctions.

Pompeo criticized Iran’s political, judicial and military leaders and said the government “ruthlessly suppressed the human rights, dignity and fundamental freedoms of its own people.”
