Moscow on latest US sanctions: ‘Playing with fire can be dangerous’

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in a statement on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry that tensions had arisen in connection with the introduction of new sanctions imposed by Washington on Moscow.

“We continue to observe how the United States is practicing the introduction of sanctions against our country. It seems that this has turned into a kind of national amusement,” Ryabkov said.

“We urge those who control the Washington sanctioning machine to become familiar, even superficially, with our history, to stop wasting time. It would also be worth recalling a concept such as global stability. It is stupid to play with fire, as this can be dangerous,” he said.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced about the blacklisting of 33 personalities and entities belonging to Russia’s military industrial complex and the country’s intelligence.

While Russia has been reacting to the United States’ decision to activate new sanctions against its country, “extreme indignation” has sprung up in Beijing.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, on Friday at a press conference, US actions “violate the principles of international relations,” adding that such sanctions did not affect its strategic cooperation with China and Russia.

US sanctions against China will not influence relations between Beijing and Moscow in the area of military-technical cooperation, but they are a serious basis for developing measures to resist Washington’s attempts to undermine Russian military exports, Igor Korotchenko said.

A senior US administration official said the US had introduced sanctions against officials from China’s Equipment Development Department and added 33 Russian individuals and entities, including the Russian company Rosoboronexport, to its blacklist of Defense and Intelligence from Russia.

The reason for the sanctions is the purchase by China of ten Sukhoi Su-35 4 + fighters and S-400 ground-to-air missile systems to Russia.

According to him, China is an independent country. The US attacks on Beijing will only cause China to conflict with the US in all directions.
The contracts for the S-400 and Su-35 are in the final phase and will be concluded shortly, explained Korotchenko.

The expert assumed that the US hoped that, after the introduction of sanctions, a number of countries would stop cooperation with Russia in the military sphere.
