‘Fort Trump’: Poland Exaggerates its Role and Importance

Published on: Sep 23, 2018 @ 00:26 – Poland plans to deploy a US military base on its eastern or northeastern border, Prime Minister Michal Dworczyk’s chief of staff told FM radio.

“It is too soon to talk about specific places. One thing can be said: we would like this decision to be taken somewhere on the eastern flank, northeast or eastern Poland,” Dworczyk said.

At the same time, he insists that the US base should ensure the security of Poland.

“Everyone understands that a decision on the deployment of permanent US bases in Poland would be a very big event, that would significantly affect the security of the entire region and, of course, Poland,” he said.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump declared that the US is still evaluating the possibility of establishing a permanent US base in Poland and that Warsaw is ready to pay “billions and billions of dollars” for it.

Polish President Andrzej Duda recalled that Warsaw hopes to create a permanent military base in Poland and even proposed that it be called Fort Trump. Previously, Poland offered to permanently host a US armored division, costing about $ 1.5 to 2 billion. The proposal was presented outside the NATO framework on a bilateral basis.

Political scientist Vladimir Bruter commented that the deployment of the US military base in Poland would only trigger tension in the Eastern European region.

“If the United States and Poland believe that this calms the situation in Eastern Europe and makes it more predictable, I personally think it is not so. The Polish initiative obviously presupposes further action to contain Russia on its western borders,” the analyst said.

“Those who are trying to deploy new weapons in Eastern Europe should understand that this in general only inflames the situation, and from history we remember that Eastern Europe is almost the most explosive place in the world,” Bruter said.

The analyst considers that the decision of Warsaw to establish a US military base in the country is not only due to the desire to please Washington.

“Poland considers itself to be a serious, and practically the only major, protagonist in Eastern Europe and is trying to demonstrate its exclusivity in this way, just as Poland did during the inter-war period,” Bruter said.

“But the catastrophe that struck Poland during World War II shows that Poland exaggerated its role and importance. The same thing Poland is doing now … Probably, this idea will not lead to anything,” concluded the political scientist to the comment on the implementation of the North American base.

Lately, the issue of military danger, allegedly originated by Russia, is being actively discussed in Poland. In connection with this, the program of sharp increase in the size of the Polish army was adopted. A multinational NATO combat group at battalion level and an armored brigade of the US Army were stationed in Poland.

Poland has officially proposed the allocation of up to $2 billion to deploy a US armored division in its territory.

Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it will never attack any of the NATO countries. According to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, NATO is aware that there is no plan by Russia to attack any country, but the Alliance simply seizes the opportunity to deploy more equipment and battalions near the Russian borders.
