Ukraine should review all international treaty structure with Russia, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin on Monday.

“We must drastically review the whole framework of any international treaty with Russia; what we are doing now in the CIS, this analysis is being prepared, in each ministry, there is coordination: the same thing should be done with Russia … As we can no longer be guided by the previous treaty framework,” Klimkin told Ukrainian television channel ICTV.

Last week, Klimkin announced that the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine had developed a package of documents to end the Treaty of Friendship with Russia.

Although he wants to review ties with Russia, the Ukrainian minister recognized the importance of Russian participation in resolving Ukraine’s so-called internal crisis by defending the format of the so-called Quartet of Normandy (Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany) as the best option for dealing with conflicts in the Donbass region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have no chance of recovering the Crimea, believes a writer for the American magazine The National Interest.

“The Crimea became part of the Russian Empire after being conquered from Turkey more than two centuries ago and remained Russian within the Soviet Union until 1954,” he wrote .

According to the writer, most of the population of the Crimea is made up of Russians, who wanted to reunite to the country. Returning the Crimean peninsula to Kiev without the consent of its residents would be a mistake, believes the journalist.

Bandow also recalled the words of the Washington Post journalist, Christian Caryl, that the “Crimea belongs to Ukraine”.

“No, it belongs to the residents of Crimea,” he said.
