Van Allen What? Russia to Propose New Space station Near Moon

Russia will propose a new space station project near the moon, reports the space agency Roscosmos.

“It may be a Russian or an international station, that’s a matter for discussion,” said Dmitry Rogozin, director of Roscosmos, in a meeting with young industry experts.

He did not rule out US involvement in the new project. In addition, the station may be set up in partnership with the BRICS partner countries.

According to the director of the corporation, in preparation for the launch of the new crew of the International Space Station (ISS) scheduled for October 11, he will hold talks in Baikonur with NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine and discuss the Russian view of cooperation in the orbit of the Moon.

Previously, Rogozin noted that Russia cannot afford to participate in the program of a station near the Moon with the US as the project exists today.

In September of last year, Roscosmos and NASA signed a memorandum of cooperation for the creation of an international station in the Moon’s orbit, later called The Gateway.

It is assumed that the first module – Power Propulsion Module – will be launched in 2022. And in 2023, the ESPRIT fuel storage module and the USUtilization module, a small pressurized space that allows the entry of a team in the first gateway.

Also in the planning stage is the launch of a logistics module and a manipulator arm to carry loads along the surface of the station. International and North American residential modules should be added from 2024 to 2025.

It was proposed to Russia to construct a compartment for the departure of the cosmonauts to the surface of the station. However, according to the source, that role did not satisfy the Russian side – the compartment should be built according to US technical standards, in particular with the measurements of the American diving.
